Lopez de Heredia – Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2012
Rioja Alta, Spain
A time capsule from another era, Lopez de Heredia’s Viña Tondonia Reserva 2012 is not just a wine—it’s a philosophy. One of the last great bastions of traditional Rioja, Lopez de Heredia continues to craft wines that defy trends, celebrate patience, and honor place. The 2012 vintage is a stunning example of that devotion: graceful, complex, and unmistakably Tondonia.
Sourced from estate vineyards along the Ebro River in Rioja Alta, the 2012 Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo (70%), Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, aged nearly six years in American oak barrels and then further in bottle before release. The result is a wine of astonishing elegance and depth—red cherry, dried orange peel, cedar, tobacco, and leather unfold in delicate, seamless layers.
There’s nothing rushed here. The palate is silky yet vibrant, with fine-grained tannins and a lifted acidity that speaks of time and tradition. It’s a living piece of Rioja history, offering both immediate beauty and decades of potential.
