Domaine du Pégau – Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Cuvée Réservée” 2016
Southern Rhône, France
One of the Rhône Valley’s most revered traditionalists, Domaine du Pégau has built its legend on soulful, untamed expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape—and the 2016 vintage stands among its finest achievements. Universally hailed as a great year in the Southern Rhône, 2016 gave Pégau the perfect raw material to craft a wine of power, depth, and haunting complexity.
Sourced from old vines across the estate’s best parcels, the Cuvée Réservée 2016 blends roughly 80% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and a field mix of other native grapes. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in ancient foudres, it’s unapologetically old-school—rich, spicy, and deeply expressive of place.
In the glass, it’s an aromatic storm of black cherry, leather, garrigue, lavender, pepper, and game. The palate is broad yet beautifully balanced, delivering layers of dark fruit, smoked herbs, licorice, and truffle wrapped in fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish lingers for minutes, echoing the wild beauty of its terroir.
